As NYFW rages on, our beloved city streets have been filled with influencers, models, celebrities and fashion enthusiasts setting their own stage. NYFW street style is the painted canvas of the high end fashion shows. The runway may define the upcoming trends, but it’s the people who attend the shows that show you how to  dress or wear it for “everyday life”. Even if the show goer looks are a little too… “fashiony” for your everyday life, they will absolutely spark some ideas to spice up your style. So, if you’re someone who needs some inspiration look no further! I’ll let you in on my little secret of how I tone down that big bold fashion look to fit into the “basic b” life style.

When I watch these shows I literally drool. I love the daring high fashion look. But let’s be honest. If I showed up to my office in some crazy ass get up, I wouldn’t be worried about what people thought, I would be worried about function. You know what I mean? My bell sleeves can’t be dipped in salad dressing while answering emails. Not saying that’s happened, but let’s just say it’s a warning. So how do we stay high end and functional? I’m no expert, but I do love clothes and I do work a very normal “9-5” (8:30-9ish) and still get my fashion on.

First thing you’re going to want to do it get some inspiration! I highly recommend checking out some coverage of the show happening now in New York. These shows will make you see things in a different light. You’ll be asking yourself “why didn’t I ever think to do that?” Snag some photos from your favorite online outlets covering this week’s fashion events.

I also recommend Pinterest, its super easy and they have a ton of new photos every day. You can even take some photos from magazines; yes the ancient art form still exists. [If she’s asking what a magazine is she’s too young for you bro.] Que Michael Scott’s voice.

From there create a fashion mood board. Yes this sounds like a high school art project, but I’m serious. After you gathered all your photos print, tear and cut those pictures out. Following that, pin them to a cork board. Using a cork board for your fashion mood board will double as a cute aesthetic for your office, bedroom or a walk in closet. This will also be a constant reminder of inspiration while you’re getting dressed. I’m telling you, try this! You will not be disappointed.

After you have some inspiration, raid your closet. Grab stuff that comes close to matching your mood board photos. Try things on and don’t be afraid to try new things. Keep in mind these looks don’t have to be exact. For example I love the over-sized white button up look with a sweater. The high end version involves no pants, and I clearly need to wear pants to work, so I added some vegan leather leggings to make it more functional. To spice this outfit up for an evening look I would wear a short leather skirt, tights and some knee high boots. Go from day to night with one little clothing switch and some tights. This look is super functional but still super stylish and way on trend. Once you start playing around you will be shocked at how stylish you already were. Sometimes you just need a different perspective.

Check out this other example.

I layered a cropped turtleneck over a vegan leather t-shirt dress. The sweater added some contrast and texture between the leather and the knitted sweater.  My favorite element added to this outfit is the fringe mock suede boots. This made the all-black outfit pop without any color. The high end version of this would be a shorter skirt, bigger sleeves and some open toed block heels. Again, totally obsessed but this outfit was for Christmas Eve dinner, and I was the host. Any fashionista hosting a holiday, working the kitchen in block heels and a short skirt, you’re amazing. This chick (me) would have been putting on a show that would include unwanted butt cleavage and some sloppy acrobatics. I think everyone would be good on that. I love that this fashion “downgrade” (I guess we can call it that,) is still super cute and stylish and absolutely functional.

My favorite thing to do is to recreate outfits with my own little touch to it. I use photos for inspiration every single day. This week you can just tune into the amazing shows that are happening and see what the professionals are wearing. Let that trickle down into your everyday life and you’ll be a trend setter in no time. If haven’t been able to check out the shows recently, so far there is no lack of color. Patterns are still going hard, 90’s throw backs aren’t going anywhere and don’t say good bye to neutrals. They are all here to stay. Pretty much this year’s 2022 fashion week is 2021 on steroids.
